MINI’s super Cooper diesel
It’s 10 years since the MINI was born again and in that time it has certainly made its ‘marque’.
For the MINI adventure goes on and on as the marque keeps coming up with more models to make the most of its desirability.
It started life as a hatchback, branched out with the Convertible, Clubman ‘estate’, bigger four door Countryman and now the Coupe. But amid the excitement of all new models MINI also drops in new versions and special editions.
One of those is the performance diesel version the Cooper SD available in all body styles.
It shares the sportier Cooper S body styling including the bonnet air scoop, under which is the 143hp 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine used in the popular BMW 118d and 318d, making it the biggest engine ever in a production MINI throughout its 52 year history. It’s also the first diesel to bear the Cooper S tag, until now traditionally reserved for finely honed petrol engines.
The Cooper SD offers a credible performance alternative to the Cooper S with its 184hp 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine and a very different driving experience.
Whereas the Cooper S is more about delivering its performance at high revs, the SD has lots of lovely low down grunt maximum torque is between 1,750 and 2.700rpm ideal for everyday motoring which makes it more relaxing to drive.
It really is potent, not as quick on paper as the Cooper S but, with that low rev punchy performance, put your foot down and it picks up cleanly and quickly very quickly in the lower gears. If you want miles per gallon as well as miles per hour it’s capable of more than 62mpg. I achieved 55mpg overall.
Smooth and refined, the Cooper SD will pull happily from little more than 1,000rpm in lower gears so you don’t have to keep going up and down the gearbox, not that you’d mind with the new six speed manual gearbox having a light, precise shift. A six speed automatic transmission with shift pad rolex watches for sale dles on the steering wheel is optional.
But it doesn’t come cheap the Cooper SD costs 740 more than the petrol S model and a whopping 2,700 more than 1.6 litre diesel but, being a MINI, it should hold its money well when you sell it.
But with 28pc more power than the 1.6 Cooper D and nearly 60pc more than the One D, the bigger diesel engine shows the MINI’s fine chassis in the best light. The ride is firm yet supple so it cruises comfortably on decent roads. But is the go kart like handling that will put a big smile on your face. With its direct, responsive steering and the wheels well out to the corners of the car the MINI sits snugly on the road with bags of grip through corners. And I was driving the convertible fixed roof models handle even better although it was more a case of the odd creak indicating there was some body flexing rather than feeling it.
Inside the four seater conv rolex watches for sale ertible is better suited to children in the back although you could squeeze a couple of small adults in if those up front shove forward. But I suspect you are more likely to use the back seat to carry the stuff you can’t get in the boot. It’s hardly big at 170 litres with the roof in place put it down and it drops to 125 litres. Getting things in and out is not helped by the slotty opening I just about managed to squeeze an overnight case through it and was beaten by a boxed slow cooker an unusual test I admit but the wife wanted a new one! Rear seat backs split 50/50 and fold flat but not flush with the boot floor.
The interior is a work of art and it’s a joy to be in the driver’s seat with the traditional big central speedo, rev counter on the steering column, rows of toggle switches on the fascia and top of the windscreen and quality materials and trims. The driving position has all the adjustment you need, the only problem being that rear visibility is severely restricted with the soft top roof up so I was grateful for the rear parking sensors. The roof folds down quickly with the front section going back and stopping to open up the front section before folding down completely. With the clip in wind deflector part of the 400 conve rolex watches for sale rtible pack including heated front seats rolex watches for sale behind the front passengers’ heads and the side windows up there is little buffeting even at motorway speeds.
The Cooper SD comes packed with creature comforts and safety and security kit even before you start delving into the lengthy list of desirable option packs and extras.
